hi hi hi !! may i please request a personality ship with bts and ateez !! i apologize in advance bc it's super long </3

I’m a 5’9.5 (basically 5’10) girl with dark skin, jet black hair (currently in long twists rn!!), and i’m on the curvier side (esp hips and my thighs) !! some of my favorite features are my plump lips (and i have a beauty mark on my bottom lip!), my long legs (that look so so so so good in skirts and dresses), my kempt and pretty fingernails, and my eyelashes !!! i’m a virgo (and surprisingly i get along with all the signs, i cant think of a sole zodiac sign i DONT mix well with), and i am an i/enfj (i got 51% extravert 49% intra the first time, then 50% for both the second time!! ) and i honestly agree—i’m an ambivert all the way! i often come off as cold/shy when meeting new people (one of my closest friends avoided me for a month before meeting me because i looked so intimidating LMAO), but once you get close to me i turn into a bundle of warmth and love: i will never stop texting them the <3 emoji every morning or buying my friends/s/o their favorite starbucks order when they need a little cheer-me-up.

i’m extremely passionate about the issues and people i care about and the goals and dreams i have. I’m creative, patient, an extremely good listener, caring, a social butterfly, and extremely hardworking. my friends always told me of my heart of gold and how perceptive i am of the people around me—noticing immediately when something is wrong and trying to make them feel better. I’m also very headstrong, detailed, and determined!! my friends also call me a nerd since i’ve had all a’s since kindergarten—i LOVE school and would describe myself as intelligent. i really like that i’m empathetic and motivational to those around me. it’s really easy for me to show my affection, adoration, and support for someone because i just want everyone to feel loved and safe :( i HATE seeing my loved ones sad, and when people usually have problems about anything (from family to just school), i’m the one they come to talk to because of my warm and openminded heart. I love sharing happiness with my friends in their goals and always hype them up no matter what, and it makes me so so so so happy seeing my loved ones content. im also really, really funny (my fave personality trait of mine tbh)!! I’m always cracking jokes and laughing (sometimes for no reason LMAOO). i would be in the library at like 7 am with my friends and struggle with stifling my laugh from jokes i told </3

I also love to go out and explore—whether trying out a new restaurant in the city or a newly opened amusement park or trying something new, like skydiving (or some other crazy but fun idea), trying recipes from around the world, or trying sledding for the first time! at the same time, i like really chill, mellow spending-time-alone-or-with-one-other-person activities like baking (my favorite treat to bake is red velvet cupcakes and cheddar bay biscuits) and dancing !! (i’ve been a dancer for more than 12 years!!). i can also speak more than 5 languages (including korean!) and i’m always saying random phrases (like thank you, i love u so much!, gtfo my face, that sucks ass) in a random language too LMFAOOO. i often think being a coffee/cafe lover is a personality trait (i love love love love love coffee) i also love accessories (earrings, necklaces, bracelets, anklets, rings, etc) and would die of happiness when the day i can wear matching accessories with my s/o comes.

besides being my bestfriend who i can kiss and whatnot (hehe), my ideal type is a TALL (THEY DONT HAVE TO BE but 5’9+...i’m already tall but pls .5 of an inch taller would be enough) man who has eyes for me and only me !!! they may look cold/cool/mysterious/laid back at first glance (like “i dont like u lol” or “yeah haha 🙂" to any other girls but “hi baby what can i do for u today to please the loml” with me <3) but turn into the sweetest, warmest, cutest honey bun once i get to know them! (kinda like me)!! ALSO a man who can pull off all black outfits like those are my FAVORITE omg. he needs to have a BIG sense of humor (like i want to laugh every second i’m with him and laugh so hard that our stomachs start hurting and we beg each other to stop making jokes type of humor), fashionable (so i can learn fashion pls and wear coordinated outfits with him). i just want a boy who i could talk to and listen to for HOURS. like i would follow him into the bathroom as he showers and sit on the toilet and just listen to him talk about his day or vent to him, but also a boy that loves comfortable silence!! like just cuddling with each other or im studying, and hes working on a personal project so that just being with him makes me feel warm <3 i want a s/o who’s willing to go out and travel with me so i could take off guard pics of him and make him my wallpaper until he begs me to change it. im also not good at conflict so if conflict arises, id love a boy who knows how to talk me down and open up the room for conversation and make me feel safe and not as if im confronted or wrong, someone where we can just talk, resolve our problem, and make it up with a hug or night out!! this kinda leads to me wanting a relationship where we both help improve each other and our flaws (for example some of my flaws are callousness, taking things to heart sometimes, and not opening up easily, etc), so i’d really appreciate a relationship where my partner and i can help each other grow as people. i also love love love to cook, so i’d love an s/o that loves cooking with me and teaching each other how to cook each other’s cultural foods (i would love to teach my bf how to cook jollof rice and have a cookoff one day). I like ALL 5 of the love languages but my top 3 tied for 1st are quality time (THIS i want to spend everyday with my bf at chinatown or a new city exploring), words of affirmation (someone who reaffirms me of their love continuously, supportively, and in sweet ways), and acts of service (cooking my favorite food when i’m down, doing chores that i cant do when tired). men who are really expressive through touch are also ideal <3 i'd shy away from pda, but inside the house i’d be so happy yet so shy and flustered when they express their love through touch (like laying in my lap so i can play with their hair, holding my hand while watching tv, cuddling while talking about whatever). OR like the SLIGHTEST compliment or act of love (LIKE BACKHUGS OR HOLDING HANDS OR KISSING MY BEAUTY MARKS OR FOREHEAD KISSESJSJSJSJ). i love a man who's goal oriented, know what he wants, and makes the move first (kinda like taking control of the relationship!!) in all, i’d just love to be really appreciated and loved and also show the same love, support, warmth, closeness, and happiness to my bf <3 tysm <333

Because no one is talking about how shitty Alberta, Canada is right now, here we go.

Warning, coarse language and if you’re part of the oil industry, this may be a wake up call for you. Or you might fight me on this, we’ll see. I’m also not wishing the oil industry to be gone, it’s just that I have problems with it. This is not me attacking every single person in the oil industry, just the assholes complaining about how they only made 11 mil. and say that the health care system needs to pay for it.

Trudeau is so far up Ontario and Quebec’s ass, us Albertains are struggling. (I can’t speak for Saskatchewan, Manitoba or BC so if anyone wants to add anything about that go ahead) Our prime minister doesn’t give a shit, our provincial gouvernment wants to watch the health care and education system burn. I mean if COVID hadn’t happened, my parents who have over 30 years of seniority in mental health probably would have been laid off. My mother-in-law is terrified of losing her job in mental health while working in the jails for the NCR (not-criminally responisible) because literally everyone is.

Oil is going so far down, and there’s nothing that we can do because UCP fucking sucks. It’s always the ones that promise riches in oil that fuck it up.

Also, Jason Kenny is a homophobic piece of shit.

First up, the UCP projects 6,400 - 7,400 Union jobs lost by 2023. MEDICAL JOBS LOST. “ Ever wonder why there are so many casual and part-time RNs? It’s because overtime allows them to make full-time pay working part-time hours.” - Danielle Smith, Calgary Herald. First off, BULLSHIT. There aren’t enough openings for OT in the healthcare system to even TRY to bring in full-time pay. Also, you bid on a shift, you don’t just say “I’m part-time, I’ll take OT.” and get it. There’s a series of things that happen before you get OT, unless no one else bids for it (good luck for that btw.) Also, by diminishing pays and OT pays, you are punishing nurses who work full-time who sometimes need the extra OT. Not to mention, it’s Overtime, you get paid 1 1/2x your wage because it’s overtime. Not because they’re special. This could be compared to literally any other career and still be the same principle. Also, many part-time/casual nurses? Bitch, what kind of world are you living in?

Instead of attacking nurses for making over $100,000 a year, why don’t you complain about the oil industry people who make $12.57 million dollars a year? Million. That’s how much most RN’s would make in 127 years if they never paid for a single thing, even with OT. Healthcare workers in 2018 (generally) got paid an hourly wage of $31.33 to a $44.98 oil worker. Again, not attacking every single person in the oil industry, just the assholes complaining about how they only made 11 mil. and say that the health care system needs to pay for it.

I have loads against the oil industry, not just environmentally, but most of the people where I live (not every single person in the industry) are honestly whiny pieces of shit. My mother had to take a job (a job in mental health nursing) where she got paid LESS than a Toys-R-Us employee in the 90’s. SHE HAD A DEGREE IN NURSING AND WAS MAKING LESS THEN SOMEONE IN A TOYS-R-US. While oil field workers are able to afford three story houses in fucking the Hamptons and shit. And complain. It’s absolute bullshit.

I get that oil goes up and down and that it sucks when it does. But get another job then. Get an actual post-secondary education that you can use for a different career path because guys. OIL IS A FINITE RESOURCE. There are so many diversifying career paths that you could be doing. Hell take up some sort of trades career and you’d be better off. You’d probably have to get rid of your house in Arizona and huge house in the Hamptons and downsize. Maybe give up the annual trip to Hawaii and change it to every two years, But guess what we’ve had to do for the entirety of our lives? THE SAME THING.

You have to give somethings up in order for not just others to be able to actually live their lives, but it also helps you. No more travelling to a different province and not being able to see your family for weeks at a time. No more ups and downs with the finite resource. Less gas used, you’d probably start to open up your mind and start using it without bringing up 40 conspiracy theories about how the 5G towers are going to give people cancer and start doing something potentially life-changing (in a good way). I’m not saying abandon the oil industry, but stop relying on it. STOP RELYING ON THE OIL INDUSTRY. Thank you, and spread the word.

hey gracie! how u doing? kinda a personal issue of mine... i've been diagnosed with depression and anxiety so severe i can't go to school anymore atm, so I'm at home recovering and visiting therapy every week, but my mom can't stand it that i'm at home doing nothing "productive" while she works. She says I'm lazy and am not "working enough on myself", and I'm just a burden and she's so disappointed of me. I try to help her in the house as much as I can but I sometimes have really low energy (1)

2/3 and sometimes it's hard to just get out of bed for me. She doesn't really understand my problems, we've been on a therapy session together and the therapist said my mom's expections are crazy high and she should acknowledge that I already go to therapy and initiated going to a clinic where i'll be staying at the daytime myself, and she kinda thought about it but the next day she already yelled at me again for being passive and called me a failure and bad person. I hate myself even more now😧 -3/3 (depression anon) sry, this was really just a rant, I don't want to pull you down or kill your mood or anything. I just feel so incompetent, my therpist said I should just talk about it with her but she doesn't really listen and gets angry when I try (aries sun/asc/mars hahah), it's heartbreaking bc my mom used to be kinda proud of me when I still went to school and had friends and shit and i rlly love her but she's so harsh and I already regret taking this recovery break bc it's just trouble 😟- I’m doing great, thank you for asking 💞 First I’d just like to say that it’s perfectly okay to rant. It’s a normal thing to want to do, especially when you’re in this kind of situation and I highly respect your last message about not wanting to bring me down. So this rant of yours is something that I can really touch on because I’ve been in a very similar situation but before getting into that, I just want to get real personal and give you some background. So my father is not really in the picture, my parents separated when I was 4. My memories of that time are not good memories for the most part and my mom is the person that raised me but shes also very temperamental. I am the youngest of 4 siblings and our mom is very moody. You never know what side of her you’re getting that day or that moment. Sometimes she’s in a good mood and then other times she’s terrible to be around. She can be judgy, pushy, etc. My mom has had some serious trauma in her life and she never got treated for it and she’s my mom and I love her but she’s also a very lost and complicated and negative soul/energy to have around and I grew up with that. I was a very quiet child and very receptive to the things around me (I am an empath) and so the relationship I have with my mom is very difficult and bumpy. I live in a very isolated town filled with racists, sexists, highly religious people, and things of that nature and my mom grew up in a similar mindset and me having the exact opposite and us being both opinionated, that also puts a damper on things. Our discussions can get heated although I hate conflict. My mom had always felt like she was a terrible mother and she also has struggled with depression, other issues, etc and still does and so having a temperamental and depressed mother is something that impacted me from a very early age because my entire life she’s been like that. My oldest sister got pregnant in high school, my sister got into some things I’d rather no discuss, my brother got kicked out and he decided to drop out of school, and so my mom has always battled with this “I’m a bad mom” kind of thing and she puts a lot of pressure on me, especially academically. I’m a A/B/C average student and I’m okay with that because I’m interested in other things but sometimes in her eyes, it’s not enough. She never did good at school either and she had a child (my oldest sister) at a very early age and I think she’s always felt like a failure and in turn, all of this negative energy surrounding my mom is something I’ve been feeling intuitively and experiencing first hand my entire life and I got very depressed from it and then I got depressed from not having contact with my bestfriend for a year and then being in an abusive relationship. After that relationship, I decided I wanted to go to therapy (I’ve been in therapy for little over a year now) and I also decided to take a break from public school and I’m enrolled in an online school and I’m home all day and just like your mom, my mom thinks I’m doing nothing all day. It can be really hard but I’ve eventually learned to put myself first and realize that my mom has her own issues that she projects into me but I don’t have to let her project them onto me. I learned to block her negativity even when she’s being negative. It’s a really hard thing to do and all of the expectations your mom has for you don’t have to be your expectations. Our moms are the people thing brought us into this world physically and they’re raising us and it can seem like they’re the most powerful person because they have such a hold on us but that doesn’t mean that our expectations are their expectations and we’re not children anymore, we can realize what our expectations and wants are and if you live at home still that’s okay, you’d still have to respect your moms rules and things like that but you’re also old enough to think for yourself and so when you don’t meet your moms expectations, it’s gonna be devastating but it’s just a matter of learning overtime that one day you’re going to be out of the house and you’ll have your own life to live and this is the point in time where you’re developing that mindset and it’s okay to have that. Your mom will always be your mom but it’s okay to realize, even if she doesn’t, that you don’t have to fit her wants and expectations. You’re recovering from things right now and that’s a very up and down process that takes a lot out of you physically, mentally, and emotionally and you should never feel bad about that. It’s a very sacred thing to give yourself a break and not everyone, even our own moms, will understand that. We’re at an age where yea we’re still living under their roof but we also have the mental ability to think about our futures because we’re about to be our own individuals with our own lives. I hope this helped in some way ❤️

That thought that was too complicated to word earlier.

We are aware that people all respond to trauma differently. We’ve known this for some time now. We’ve told other people this a lot. Because it’s not good to compare your trauma to someone else’s trauma.

We have heard from time to time that because of processing and sensory issues, sometimes things that don’t cause trauma with NTs can cause trauma to autistics. just... because of those basic differences in how the autistic brain handles things. How true this is we’ve never looked into because we didn’t think it was something we needed to worry about.

Now... we’re kinda starting to wonder.

We been through some shit, no lie. Not even gonna try and downplay the level of shit we been through or that it started before we were even born.

For a long time we thought our father was our primary abuser. Because we could remember some of the things he’d done. We grew up thinking it was discipline. Discipline shouldn’t leave bruises behind. Especially on a seven year old.

Those are things we’ve always known, have never forgotten. Our dad beat us. Never been a question. The whole family, extended as well, knew he did. His words were he wanted his kids to fear him more than anything else in this world. Yes... he did say that, more than once.

The rest of the shit he did we didn’t learn for years.

(it always feels like cognitive dissonance that our dad abused us far more overtly and specifically and yet we hate our mother and don’t hate him. we don’t forgive what he did, but it comes down to our father loved us our mother did NOT and we could feel it even then. they both HURT us, damaged us, but the intent was very different and our dad has since TRIED to apologize. our mother NEVER has.)

For a long time... we believed our mother was the safe parent. Because she wasn’t as physically aggressive the way our father was. So it would confuse us that in journals and diaries over the years the most common phrase (other than just feeling like we don’t fucking fit anywhere) was that we hated our mother. It didn’t make a whole lot of sense. (ironically, when our mother read our diaries she was far more concerned with her nine year old daughter hating her rather than the wanting to die part, go figure.)

That was before we knew a lot of things or understood what really counts as abuse.

Over the years we have learned that in some ways, our mother was FAR more abusive. We have learned that children who grow up in abusive homes often ally to the less violent parent because of a NEED to feel there is someone they can trust.

Our mother used that. She would twist things to make us question our reality so badly. Some days we didn’t think we could trust anything we thought we remembered. She made fun of us. She belittled us.She manipulated us. She toyed with us.

My mother has always been about appearances and how the outside world perceived her family. She had this ideal image that was supposed to be projected. Very often we were the problem child who marred her perfect little vision.

Our parents had a rocky marriage at best. We would hear their fights through the floor of our bedroom. They would each use us as a sounding board for shit no kid should be dealing with, would try and sway us to their side. We were left feeling like we were always in the middle of some tug of war and we were supposed to know how to fix what was wrong, or we would have to choose a side. It sucked and left us believing we always had to take care of everyone around us.

We got good at that. Too good.

But here’s the thing. So much of before we were in middle school is piecemeal recall. What things we can recall often didn’t happen IN our home. At school. Around the neighborhood (because we used to wander a lot. so much.). It’s hard to remember things that happened at home at all through the years. We can remember the layout of the house. We could draw it right now if we wanted to. We remember we played musical rooms. We know that we would rearrange our whole room periodically. We can remember things that happened with our brother. We remember random things. We can’t directly recall most of the abusive situations. We know people hold them. We also know so far, no one cares to share them.

Here’s the thing. When we think about our mother in those years, beyond the art crap she would let us do... what we most recall are things like, her yelling at us repeatedly about changing the cat boxes because we had no concept of time and our sense of smell does NOT work like it should. We remember for every nice thing she did there were half a dozen other things we couldn’t understand why she’d do but hurt us. We couldn’t understand why something always rang false with what she would say to us. We knew she treated our siblings differently, but we didn’t know why. She was always telling people ‘that’s just how she is’ or ‘she’s in one of her moods’. She was always belittling what we felt, more worried about how the family would be perceived.

(one notable trip to the base ER for yet another fall because we were clumsy af and had numerous sprained and twisted ankles and wrists and such over the years, she commented ‘god i hope these doctors don’t think you’re being abused’ and we recall looking at her and thinking ‘god forbid someone get a clue and know the truth right?’)

we remember ending up in the ER and having to be held down by two nurses and a doctor (we assume we’d started to have seizures) to give us a shot bc our idiot mother figured we’d grown out of a penicillin allergy (that she shares and is very much an adult and still fucking had) and gave it to us anyway even when we questioned the wisdom of taking it. (the doctor made sure WE understood, not just our mother, that taking that shit could kill us.)

why are we even going over all of this? because of what happened when we woke up, that reflexive hitting our own hand and telling ourselves to ‘stop that’. because we could picture our mother doing that to us.

(this woman would hit hard enough to bruise her own damn hand okay? she once broke her finger trying to hit the dog for wiggling too much while she was trying to unravel the chain and missed and hit my brother’s Tonka truck instead. and that was the dog. she burst blood vessels in her hand giving my brother a ‘spanking’.)

And we started to wonder... all those splits that aren’t from explicit abuse and the LARGE number of kids in our system... learning about being autistic (and yeah, the signs were SO there even as a two and three and four year old)... how much damage this woman has actually done to us.

(and this is where we have to say... we sometimes remember way more than we think we remember and at the same time so much less. like what did actually happen at home after we almost drowned in canyon lake? got not a clue.)

We used to think it was just... the extent of what we’d been through. Except... it didn’t feel right. Especially because of the Mountain Caves. And the people who stay there. Because they don’t function in a way that would lend itself to being able to take care of themselves. We used to say that all of them were... not quite right in the head. That there was some damage or deficiency in every single one of them. We have wildchild, who often has to be kept in a straight jacket to keep from clawing her face to ribbons and screams and bangs her head. she’s never talked. ever. and she doesn’t scream all the time. but it’s the only sound we’ve ever heard her make.

How many splits have we had for the sole purpose of appearing normal because whatever we were doing was unacceptable and wrong? We have a lot of nonvebal kids. We never really thought about it because we ARE multiple and we have been through some shit and trauma can do that.

We just wonder... how much of the way our system grew came from just trying to find ways to LOOK more normal. Because of our mother. How much of our system’s development was because of being autistic and having a mother who... hated us and everything about us?

And now we feel like we’re trying to say the only reason our system is so big is because of being autistic and that’s not what we’re saying. I’m not sure what we’re saying now... We’re not looking for something to blame. We’re not trying to say we weren’t abused or we were just ‘too sensitive’. That’s not what we’re saying.

I don’t know what we’re trying to say. It made sense a few minutes ago and now it’s just... confused and tied up in half a dozen other things. and it still comes down to we may never know. Trying to untangle things now is impossible. And we already knew our mother was a bitch. None of this changes anything.

Except that... if we’ve spent years, decades even, stopping ourselves from doing things a certain way because we internalized our mother’s reactions... how the hell do we stop doing it to ourselves? How do we stop telling ourselves what we’re doing is so very wrong or bad? how do we stop ourselves form feeling guilty when we give in because it fucking helps?

I’m so sorry to hear that, seriously.

I don’t want to hide behind excuses; if our tone or words were hurtful, that’s the way of it, and all I can do is apologize for it and learn why. It was not our intent, and as we said at the start of it, we’re more than open to a dialogue.

I’ve received positive and negative feedback for pretty much every portion of the podcast, however (it’s not like “oh yay, person X agrees so we’re fine!” or anything, of course), and I do think there’s some value in digging into that.

Julia and I tend to be more forgiving of Martin, not that we’re asking anyone else to be. And given the virulence with which we go after D&D, I understand how hypocritical this can come across as, and how frustrating this can be too. But the reason we are is basically two-fold:

One is that we believe there’s a value to his books. Now, there’s also a value to the political discussion on Bill Maher’s show, for example, but yet amazingly, decent political commentary shouldn’t come with a side-serving of Islamophobia. I don’t watch his show, so why should I accept and praise books that don’t handle race well? That don’t handle female sexuality that amazingly, particularly in the cause of wlw scenes? That oftentimes do feel like the sexual violence could be easily toned down, or it’s unnecessarily gendered, or it does fall into unfortunate patterns with things like dead mothers?

The answer to that ties into the second reason, which is that his pattern is getting better. FeastDance felt more thoughtful, felt like there was more of an emphasis on female and other marginalized voices, and it felt like there was great intentionality on Martin’s part to do so. I haven’t read all his interviews; I can’t guess at what’s in his head beyond what his body of work shows us. But you can bet that if he was coming across as someone who was unwilling to reflect and engage with his own shortcomings, I wouldn’t be as invested.

I could be wrong about him. I’ve said this a lot before, but I could be really, really wrong. For now, he has my benefit of the doubt. I’m not asking you to bestow yours.

Back to the problems at hand though, and the value of his books. No, they’re not perfect at all. There’s a lot of issues, and these are issues that a more intersectional author likely wouldn’t have. To be perfectly honest, I think we’re starting to have a tendency of expecting perfection in every area from our media now. While I love that we’re finally in a place where our cultural dialogue is pushing for the change we want, and that storytellers are actually listening (look at like, Clexacon’s mere existence, for instance), I think this can easily become a double edged sword, where you’ve got the fandom raising pitchforks about Steven Universe not doing well with butch representation.

ASOIAF is no SU. It’s a book series written by a white dude in his 60s that spans twenty years. Which is why Julia and I put so much stock into the pattern and direction the books seem to be headed, because our social dialogue shifts so much. Well, depressingly not as much as it should, but I think it’s hard to deny that there is far less tolerance for bullshit in our media, and far more expectations of representational media that are not just once again glorifying the white male lens.

I don’t believe the book series simplistically does that at all. I find there to be feminist takeaways in Martin’s critique of the patriarchy, and in the way Martin holds up a lens to the bullshit assumptions by this society, which is one uncomfortably reflective of our own history (though certainly not highly accurately so). I wouldn’t say my willingness is to forgive the issues in the books, but more like say, “these are here, these are problems, but I still find this text valuable. I still find the close-POV different and worthwhile.”

I can’t speak for Julia, but I can at least say this is what we had hoped to convey in the podcast. I believe we failed spectacularly. I think our tendency not to plan or overly structure our episodes went heavily against us here. Everything we were saying was in a larger context of “and this is a problem,” but wow we really didn’t make that clear.

What we did was basically raise the problems in turn, talk about what we think his intent was and what its function in the story has been, and then conclude on “this could have been better,” which after you know…like ten minutes of what probably sounds like rationalizations was not exactly going to come across as particularly meaningful. Had we structured more, I think we could have been clearer about “and it did not land.”

Showing Dany as completely unable to comprehend the political situation she was in, and being over her head with the complexity, did *not* require a lack of Essosi POVs, even if we suspect that’s partially why Martin made that choice, for instance.

But of course that didn’t come across, especially when there were some downright flippant things said that we also didn’t clarify. Like Julia mentioning she didn’t want a Dothraki POV, probably because it’d be very close to one as distressingly violent and patriarchal as Vic, which is simply unpleasant to read (and I’m also not sure I agree; I would have loved Dany eating the heart from a POV of someone in the Dosh Khaleen, for instance).

We know each other well, and we know the intent and place we’re coming from when we’re saying something, so I think that led to us not explicating stuff that absolutely needed to be explicated. Again, there’s no excuse. I wish we had planned and presented everything differently, and it seems pretty obvious now how badly we needed to do that. I’ve learned a lot just in the past day, and all I can do is try to be better.

However, I will say…I suspect there’s also going to be content disagreements in the conclusions Julia and I land on. I’ve seen this with the fandom dialogue about the issues of sexism in the books before, and we’ve often received criticism for defending how he writes the patriarchy and women. Or for how women in the past basically are these pure, idealized victims, or they’re forgotten. We believe that’s to a point most of the time, that being one that provides a fuller picture of Westeros’s bullshit patriarchy (unnammed Mama Martell as an exception because there’s no reason for that at all), but we know it’s a point that doesn’t land.

Then there’s stuff like Arianne’s ‘hypersexuality’, which I simply don’t agree with. In my view, and something Gretchen and I were just discussing, Cersei is far more sexualized (she just tends to view sex from a manipulative standpoint always, instead of deriving pleasure from it, Jaime aside which is clearly unhealthy), and the degree to which this is a problem for a Dornish POV to have these traits (which I think is played up in the fandom) is one where I part ways with a lot of people. I can’t answer how I’d feel about it if I weren’t white, so I do my best to acknowledge that lens whenever I can. But in general, from what I can tell, my lens is also just a bit less Doylist than where some land.

And that’s fine, too. We’re all just engaging with the books how we like to do, and taking from it what’s there for us. There’s no objective takeaways, and not to belabor the point, but I could be so wrong about these books.

Why am I all Doylist with D&D? Because Watsonian analysis is useless in GoT, sure, but because they’ve violated my trust and my benefit of the doubt so thoroughly. I’m not there with Martin, and maybe that’s a problem. I suspect I might even be too Watsonian for my own good because of how engaged I find myself with certain aspects. Half of why we recorded that podcast was to kind of slap ourselves in the face with some Doylist realities, but I do now think the tone ended up being too dismissive, and I don’t feel good about it.

Anyway, this is just a super long-winded apology, as well as a meek explanation I suppose. Certainly not an excuse. This episode was requested a lot for us, probably because of how defensive of the books we get, and I feel like in our attempt to talk every angle of the issue, we ended up just coming across as doubling down on that defense. Moving forward you can bet your ass I’m going to be far more cognizant of this.

What’s funny is, feeling defensive actually wasn’t my experience at all recording it. Hell, even just pulling your asks for it, I was like, “wow this all really sucks,” and found myself getting a good deal more nervous for TWOW coming out. Because…god…I think I might be wrong. I’m back in that place I was in during season 5 where I was wondering if Sansa was going to get raped by LF (obviously a different context than the show), or if we’re not supposed to see Tyrion’s misogyny.

I’m not ready to give up on Martin yet, but I’m sure as hell not asking anyone else to forgive him. And if nothing else, I know now that at least a few takeaways we had were certainly not his intent, but the result of our own engagement and projections onto the media. I think I might be wrong (and where’s TWOW).

Baby Reacts to the Latest Steven Bomb

SPOILERS

So apparently we’re getting the obligatory beakup/ couples-first-argument storyline

It seems to me that Steven’s optimism and rose tinged glasses are being adressed as a character flaw... and let me tell ya, it IS, or at least can be no matter how much our current society worships “positivity”. A person who wants to pretend their problems dont exist isnt always inclined to see yours, even if they are otherwise a generous and nice person.

my mother has this particular flaw and while i love her to bits (after all there are no perfect humans),this has at times very frustrating for my sisters and I.

and ohhh political unrest!

MODERN political unrest as in how it is changed by internets & stuff

there were certainly some analyzeable lines in there

who knew granny pizza gave such good speeches?

a lesser show would just have pulled a new character out of their sleeves instead of grabbing a random sensible cast member wth some leadership ability

im not surprised that Lapis wants to bail after all she’s been through but i expected more of a reaction from peridot like wasn’t she resolved to protect the earth join the rebellion and stick it to the diamonds?

i mean i was never among the ones who claimed she had been sillyfied but if this doesn’t get mentioned later imma be upset this was THE opportunity for conflict/character nteraction/ serious content here

Ohh OHH I take it all back I see where this is going

She does actually want to help the rebellion, but her “follower” tendencies wouldn’t completely go away because shes in a new situation and she may have been a tad overwhelme finding herself caring for someone who was recovering from so much punishment so she’s walking on eggshells around lapis now

So they’re playing off the expectation that they’re this comey duo now but subverting it

In the end they did stay true to Peridot’s character here like of COURSE she wants to stay and fight everything weve seen from her so far would suggest it

Is that a sort of relationship deconstruction, conclusion? I may need to rewatch things & see if there was always a tedency for ‘Dot to accomodate Lapis perhaps by acting all silly, i mean they were abvle to have at least silly arguments in “the crsytal temps”

I emphasize with Peridot here I mean when you’re less affected and the other person went through something you couldn’t imagine and someone ~should~ be there to help them your own concerns start looking insignificant

Also she may feel some residual guilt for kind of dragging Lapis into this...

Then again having ‘Dot in the temple may mean more screentme especially as the Diamond’s arrival drawn nearer

Again the contrast here is interesting - Peridot is much weaker in terms of powers but has a personality suitable to fighting whereas Lapis for all her power is just plain terrified

So far the eps have been meaty enouh compared to the long stretch of calm-before-the-storm town episodes we’ve had but they haven’t even talked-over the big developements of the last bomb or the very promising trailer clips with Greg, Pearl and the others.

Indeed, distinct lack of Garnet, Amethyst and Peal so far wouln’t they have something to say about the Lapis situation?

Though mybe that is meant to emphasize this arc of Steven taking all responsibility onto himself instead of going to them like he would have earlier - it isn’t just Lapis, he hasn’t talked to them about the Connie Situation either

Pearl as the most rooted in homeworld society is surely not helping, portraying it as a “not that bad “ question & still believing in some of the mysticoism of their society even if she’s rejected the beliefs themselves

Now we KNOW there’s a secret there

But alas, Steven was dealing with a way more humany-teenagery problem there...

Is he gonna try to recruit Steven to dudebroism in his moment of weakness? That sounds interesting bc as much as pickup artists, MRM scum redpillers ETC are frightening evil, to stop them one has to understand how they spread and what they often do is prey on young men with low self esteem - young men who don’t feel very privileged, are desperatre unhappy youngsters etc so they make themselves sound reasonable at first (at least to those who dont recognize their sales pitch/ rhetoric) to exploint natural curiosity, skepticism and a tendency to support supressed truth to then feed a person all sort of bullshit untill they blame women for all their problem - actually racists and other hategroups are much the same

They offer group identity, recognition & confidence to those who dont have it - So when it comes to fighting them, “immunizing” young boys against their salespitches with information and knowledge is just as important as fighting its most malignant supporters if not more but that doesn’t rly get as much attention bc bashing obvious evil people is satisfying and people who have been hurt & traumatized and had real harm done to them may find it hard to sympathize with young men... clearly its not the victims who need to do the work but society and those who raise & educate boys at every step of the way if society could be arsed to care

i think this is the first time i’ve seen lotor angry like haggar gets under his skin so easily i hope they talk again soon. ‘I AM THE LEADER’ his VOICE damn.

ok so like i already know lotor is half-galran and he’s probably half-altean too like in the original series with the hair and all. but i don’t think haggar is his mother even though she’s also altean. he’s hyper-focused on not being like his father in that scene but he also seems the type that he’d leave a snarky comment about his mother too if she were. and she doesn’t ever refer to him as her son, only zarkon’s. she’d surely say ‘our’ son, unless she officially disowned him as part of his banishment and hates his guts but then surely he’d have at least SOME reaction to seeing her unless he was, like, literally banished at birth and doesn’t know who she is and that he’s half-altean. bc if he knew he was he’d connect the dots between ‘only altean on the ship’ and his dad v quickly.

like i do know the story behind exactly how original lotor (aka sincline) is half altean and it’s Unpleasant and makes zarkon a fucking monster and i doubt this series would even imply that that was the case here but if it did and our lotor knew this was the truth behind his parentage that could explain his lack of reaction to haggar AND his deeply intrinsic rejection of his father.

oh come ON the ship is stocked with oxygen!!!!!! why would a ship that’s intended for a robot pilot need oxygen!!!!!!!!

seven days, when he’s already in a bad way re blood loss/injury (like a healing serious wound burns calories and fluid by the truckload) and didn’t have much water to go on beforehand. if i didn’t think something was up before man.

ok so like???? if there’d been more scenes like this early on??? i’d probably be totally into klance?? like keith doesn’t really grasp the depths of the issue with lance judging by how the shot holds on lance leaving and his facial expressions and all but keith tries and lance tries and there’s no cheap joke thrown in there’s no rejecting that there was any emotional connection. it’s not solved the problem lance has by any means but it’s lance opening up to keith about his vulnerabilities and worries and it’s keith doing his best to help him both as a leader and a friend and the narrative doesn’t turn either of them into a joke for it. THAT IS MY SHIT RIGHT THERE.

like i’m obvs lowkey into enemies-friends-lovers (bc otherwise i wouldn’t consider keitor or any of my other ships which i won’t name bc i’ve made it this far without comparing anything to warcraft so i won’t start now) but i guess i much prefer the friends-lovers stage. (especially when only one half of the pair considers the other as ‘enemy’ in the first place).

ok so why do most of the galra have similar glowing eyes iirc? surely the vast majority should have the normal eyes that old zarkon and lotor have but they don’t. unless like successful generals are permitted to ‘live’ forever by taking the creatures into their bodies but then like they have far too much personality for that. the loktar ogar guy for example. what gives.

that’s kind of a leap at lotor’s motives but an understandable one, they don’t know how much lotor detests being like his father so i doubt he’d do the same damn thing his father was trying to do.

and also also imo this means haggar definitely can’t be lotor’s mother bc when we’re seeing things coran can’t possibly know like honerva on her death bed we’re probably seeing haggar’s vision of events and he doesn’t appear to be a factor in either of their lives but she remembers their wedding perfectly.

(unless he’s a zombaby but he can’t be because his eyes don’t glow).

i am not a meta writer but i would say that that kind of change from dean comes like actually an exact season ago. in the end of season 11 sam said he would take the mark of cain and dean was like no no no, but he said ok bc of all the talks sam gave to him about respecting other's people decisions (regarding the casifer story) so... yeah. also english is not my first language so sorry about that. and if i misunderstood ur post feel free to ignore this lmao.

Hi, I’m not sure if you misunderstood or not - we’ve got twelve seasons of character development here, so it’s difficult to pinpoint exactly when and why change happens. To be honest, I agree with you up to a degree, but I also think Dean accepted what Sam was saying back then because it was the only choice they had left. Like - I think Dean is very much a parent in the sense that he’s got problems about Sam being anywhere near danger in any case, but there’s still a difference in why Sam’s putting himself in danger. For instance, at the end of S5, and at the end of S12, Sam was not thinking of himself - not because he didn’t have any self-esteem, but because he knew what he was doing was important, so he needed to go forward with it despite the fact he was placing himself at risk. And this, I think that Dean respects it. He doesn’t like it, but he respects it. What he doesn’t like, be it with Sam or with Cas, is when people he loves put themselves at risk because they believe their lives don’t matter, or because they feel they need to redeem themselves - and, of course, the big reason he doesn’t like that is because he’s Mr Projection and this is how he really feels about himself. He knows there’s a certain selfishness in choosing to die for other people instead of living for other people, and he’s seen what this behaviour of his does to others - sometimes I think Sam’s still not over Dean giving himself up to literal Hellhounds to save Sam’s life - and I’m sure Bobby never got over it, either - and I think that’s why he was annoyed in S11, with both Cas and Sam.

(I mean, beside the obvious fact that they were both going to die.)

Because those choices Sam and Cas made - they were as much against themselves that they were for the world. Cas, of course, was depressed - it’s canon that he was suffering from something very close to PTSD or anxiety, was scared to leave the house and everything - so giving himself up to Lucifer was not an act of rational courage - there was a lot of self-hatred in there, and that reflects directly to Dean because Dean takes everything personally and to him, the message is, You didn’t love me enough or in the right way, because surely, if Dean had been a better - whatever - Cas would not have been depressed and lonely in the first place.

(Not necessarily true, but probably what Dean thinks, and I wonder if that’s why Dean made Cas that mixtape and generally made more of an effort to make Cas feel welcome at the Bunker.)

And as for Sam - I mostly saw it as the same kind of thing. Sure, Sam may talk about Head Choices and whatever, but we already know we can’t trust a word out of his mouth, because Sam’s much more secretive than Dean is and who knows what he does and thinks about half the time. And, again, mostly everything bad that happened in S11, that was on him. He tried to save his brother and doomed the world. He tried to follow God’s voice and found the Devil. That whole season is, for Sam, a kind of redemption journey, and it seemed destined to end in martyrdom - and Sam was okay with it, and I think that was because he’s still not over all the shit that happened to him (and won’t be over that until the writers decide to give him some space to work on it).

So, in my view - I do believe the end of S11 was a turning point for Dean, but maybe not in the sense you mentioned. I think Dean learned how to - let go, a bit. This proof he got, that God doesn’t care and He’s not all that, that yes, it was about him but also not about him - the fact he got his mother back - I think Dean made a huge effort in S12 to let go of the reins a bit and be people be people, and the problem is, it sort of blew up in his face? So, well - I’m looking forward to S13 exploring this new state of affairs, and also - possibly - reflect upon the events of S12 and work through them, because that season definitely gave us huge, meaningful things but also huge, meaningful things that were never explored in any organic way.

How I’d do Naruto Next Gen

okok I’ve been wanting to do something more in depth and organised than my usual ranting about how everything is terrible now, so here we go! (though lbr this is just my usual ranting but 10x longer)

for the sake of brevity ha and my own piece of mind I’m not gonna go into how unnecessarily hetro the ending was and how everyone should’ve been gay and hey not every couple absolutely had to get married and/or have kids and also nart should’ve gotten the opportunity to realise that becoming hokage wasn’t necessary to achieve his real goal of becoming someone loved and accepted by others and he deserved so much better tbh and why isn’t sak just running the whole show and why isn’t there more sand sibs, bc let’s face it none of that was ever gonna happen, so these ideas are mostly built with the premise that all the canon couples stay canon and all the kids are still around and the product of those ships and the big plot things that happened (like nart becoming hokage and the like) stay roughly the same

forewarning bc else someone’s bound to say something; if you enjoy the next gen stuff? not a problem! that’s great, people enjoying stuff is a good thing! I wish I could enjoy more stuff, bc enjoying things is far more fun than not enjoying things! everyone has a different taste though and for me – and a lot of other people – the way that the next gen has turned out has been a disappointment, this post is for those people, so we can talk about why we think it’s failed and what we would’ve like to see instead, if you don’t feel that way about it.. well just scroll on past this post and keep enjoying the things you enjoy! have an absolute blast, you’ve earned it!

under the cut bc I am apparently incapable of keeping my rambling concise, there’s 2000 words of only vaguely coherent thoughts and tangents, so maybe get yourself a cuppa and a snack before trudging through it (some of this I’ve said in other posts before but w/e)

first off lets change some of the kids’ personalities, there’s nothing intrinsically wrong with any of them, but like….. 90% are carbon copies of one of their parents (and mostly their dads but I won’t get into that issue rn) which is ridiculous, bc personality traits aren’t genetic?? like my mum is super chill and sensible and my dad is short-tempered, but I’m an anxious mess and my bro is an anti-social control freak.. we didn’t get any of that from either of our parents

while it’s certainly true that you might be influenced by them (me and mum share a lot of interests and tastes), it’s not a hard and fast rule and I don’t find it realistic that EVERY kid takes after their parents, though I probably wouldn’t have such a problem with it if they were more a mix of both parents than just their dads, so here’s some potential alterations:

Boruto. good fucking lord, no, we did not need a clone of Naruto heading another series, if we wanted to see a rambunctious scamp who gets into trouble but loves his friends a whole lot and has a knack for giving inspirational speeches, then there’s already a whole 700 chap manga for that! one with a far more likable and interesting rambunctious scamp tbqh. so how about we make a few alterations, maybe instead of taking after Nart, Bolt takes a bit more after Hinata? a little quiet and a bit of a pushover, but someone who’ll quickly stick up for a friend and has an ease of communication that’s a bit more Nart? not shy so much as laidback and composed, maybe he isn’t all that interested in being a ninja too, like he’s quite skilled but is a pacifist and would much rather get a civilian job as idk a baker or gardener or something

Shikadai. only a few minor changes here bc I really do like the kid as he is, I’d just like to see him using Tema’s abilities too (and maybe also being just a bit more snarky and unyielding like his mum)

Inojin. I’m kinda torn on this one, bc I do like that he’s a lot like Sai (at least in the anime, he seems to have a pretty different personality from what little we’ve seen of him in the manga???), but I think it’d be pretty interesting if he was just not like either of his parents, maybe if he was very quiet and subdued, but also the mastermind behind all the kid’s pranks, has a mischievous streak that often shocks people, but his friends always love hanging out with him bc of it. also why doesn’t he have Ino’s powers? let’s give him Ino’s powers too

Sand Kids 2.0. ok so at this point we haven’t seen nearly enough of them to say much either way but I have negative faith in kishi and ike so I’ll just say that I want them all to be Gaara’s adopted kids (since it’s still unclear if it’s just Shinki or all of ‘em atm) and I want them to be exactly like this shameless plug for me and @spellfire01‘s versions of them which are the best fucking versions and I will protect my children with my life

now some changes to the original cast (this is where I’m gonna get proper bitter, prepare yourselves):

OH NARUTO MY POOR CHILD WHAT HAVE THEY DONE TO YOU I’ve already talked about this but let me just reiterate in as eloquent a way as I can; Naruto would never become a neglectful father. N e v e r. not after the childhood he went through, no matter how much work he had to do as kage, don’t dare fucking try and tell me that Naruto – "It's almost unbearable, isn't it… the pain of being all alone. I know that feeling; I've been there, in that dark and lonely place, but now there are others, other people who mean a lot to me. I care more about them than I do myself, and I won't let anyone hurt them… They rescued me from my loneliness" – Uzumaki would EVER neglect his kids. just fucking don’t. in this version Nart is a doting and involved dad (perhaps a little too much, to the point that his kids find him kinda exhausting and have to ask him to leave them alone sometimes) who sends his clones to work at the office while he hangs out with his family.. I honestly don’t know why he doesn’t already do that

let all the girls out of their houses to do some ninja work for the love of god

poor put-upon Shino-sensei is alright.. but we’ve already had that with Iruka, I’d honestly much rather see the Cool Sensei who keeps all the kids in line without even doing much of anything and has a knack for inspiring them and always has a line of students trailing after him asking to hear more of his awesome ninja stories and everyone always trying to show off when he’s around, bc Shino is literally The Best

have Sauce and Saku be divorcees. seriously, are even the people who ship them happy with how their relationship has turned out? they barely see each other and apparently it’s been that way since chap 699, so why not just have them split up? it really wouldn’t change much, just say that, at some point after Sarada was born, they realised that they were both gay incompatible personality-wise and they were both so busy with their individual work that there wasn’t much of a relationship to lose. not only would this be good for both their characters (there’s no reason they couldn’t still be good friends) and just more sensible all-round, but it would also be a nice way to show that not every childhood romance/first love works out and that’s perfectly fine and normal and they can still live happy, full lives afterwards!

speaking of Sauce, let him spend at least a little bit of time interacting with his friends and family in Konoha, even if he’s still mostly travelling around on important missions he should at least be taking every opportunity to visit his daughter when he’s in the area, seriously, c’mon

Temari got done so dirty in that one episode.. here’re some much better words than I could ever muster but generally I’d want her to be less the ‘scary, overbearing, harsh’ mother and more the ‘strict but cool and sneaky’ mother, like she’d honestly be the type to use reverse psychology and gentle manipulation, she’d make her boy do some seemingly meaningless task that somehow makes him have an epiphany and come back to her when he’s done like “I know what I did wrong now and I’m sorry” than just shout at him and refuse to make dinner (also I just really like to hc that she’s a terrible cook so it’s Shikamaru who does all the cooking anyway)

waaay more of Chocho, Himawari and Inojin (at least enough so they all get equal billing)

show how the ninja world has grown and developed since the end of the original series (not just technologically), what do ninja do now that there aren’t any wars and international relationships are at an all-time high? have missions completely gone from being combat and intel based to more about construction and assistance? are ninja numbers actually dropping, favouring civilian jobs in these more peaceful times? how well are people – ninja or not – adjusting to these changes? is learning ninja techniques still encouraged but in a way that’s more about culture and traditions than actual use in combat (in the same way that swordplay today is mostly practiced for performance, fun and sport, rather than out of any real-life practicality)? there are so many interesting things to explore that you don’t even need to be adding in new threats to keep the series entertaining

I’ve said this before, but I think it’d be really cool and cute if after the end of the war and with some drastic changes to the ninja world’s politics, this next gen is less about becoming ninja, than realising that they’ll never be ninja (at least not in the way that their parents were) and how they react to that. maybe they’re frustrated because they hear so many cool stories about the grand battles of the previous generation and they want to be able to do those things too damnit! so the kids are just going around trying to be super-awesome ninja in a world that doesn’t really need ninja anymore, picking fights and trying to make their boring d-rank missions seem more important and dangerous than they really are, maybe at some point they learn a bit more about how hard and traumatising that life was for their parents and why the world had to change, until they eventually decide that if the role of a ninja has to change, then together they’re gonna discover what that new role will be, what will being a ninja really mean in this new, peaceful world?

My mom told me last night she thinks she only has about a year left. She is a difficult and stubborn woman sometimes, but she also struggles with consistency and accountability. She in many ways is still very much a child herself at the age of 60. I would say that my mom gave up around 48-50. My brother died when she was about 52 I think. She was already declining after her sister was brain dead. She never recovered from that and never did anything to try and heal. She used cigarettes, avoidance and distraction. She became a hermit. She gave up on herself. She was so young at this point and she called herself old. I dont know it has been a lot of tip toeing and just keeping her in the loop on the good stuff mostly. We’ve been getting into fights for awhile now. She really doesnt like it when I have different opinions than hers and she also has some very racist and bigoted opinions that are so small minded. She can be very harsh with her words, but never takes any kind of accountability. For her always being so sensitive and offended, you would think you would be very careful, but not the case. She is very much a victim of circumstance always. She also got COPD and kept smoking and told everyone to fuck off. This is after my stepdad re-painted her room and cleaned everything. She has no respect. She is a taker. She really lacks empathy and always is focused on how she feels. She expects others to get over it. No shame or anything. Like when I called her a few weeks ago and she didnt even know it was his birthday. This is the perfect example of what I am talking about. Shit is just not right in my family. Omg can you imagine if he forgot her birthday? I don’t know. She lacks the ability to be thoughtful about others. Self absorbed. I notice now that I am not saying very many nice things about her. I am very frustrated that she thinks it is ok to have this conditional love and like uses it against me. Like I don’t like this about you. OK, fine. Keep it to yourself. Not my problem. She is saying it because she wants it to hurt me. Like she doesn’t accept parts of who I am. Yeah, already knew that. You have made that pretty clear when you outright have rejected me and said that you don’t see how we can have a relationship when I have differing approaches. I find it annoying and a double standard. I am not going to lie, I have already been preparing for her passing. She can’t do anything anyway. She wouldn’t be able to come to the hospital, host anything for me, take care of my kid, help me at all with things. She would be able to help me with things probably like if the kid was sick, but I also have so many mothers as friends and astreaa that I can call them.

I didn’t choose any of this. Just wanted to point that out, in case it was forgotten. I didnt choose for my aunt to pass, or my brother to pass or for my mother to poison herself with cigarettes to the point of early passing. I didnt. I have zero control over these things. When these things happened it was like the reel in my head of my future began to just go blank. One by one the idea of the wedding, or the baby shower or the family gatherings... the reel was just blank. In these moments I had to accept none of these ideas were going to come to life for me. I would still be seeing them happen for everyone around me, but I would have to hide that it bothered me to avoid any kind of pity. Nothing is worse than having your future be stolen and also have people feel sorry for you. It already is filled with enough shame, I dont need to also feel their shame. It feels embarrassing. Reminds me of when you dont have the coolest the clothes and you want so badly to be like those people with the coolest clothes and you kind of make it work that you blend in and feel just ok, but then someone notices a hole or a stain, and then they are like oh we are not alike, you have stains and holes in your clothes, I feel bad for you, I wouldnt want to be you. Like dude, I want to wear the cool clothes too! I just dont have any money. My parents dont have it. I have no choice. dont hate on me bc of something out of my control. And I think this is sometimes the thought process that then I apply to racism and classism. Is that these are things so out of their control and yet we place these thoughts and projections and it is hurtful, and unnecessary. I empathsize with that kind of treatment from others. It is very upsetting.

In so many ways my mom is unhappy and mad and all these emotions and it sucks for her. I have zero control of this outcome.

I am 17 years old and currently have a regular drivers license, with no class M designation. I have been riding dirtbikes since I turned 4, and have been racing them for the past 3 years. Off the grid: Going offline with Maps and Earth

Hey folks, James Hilliard, back with you thanks for joining our hangout series here, part of innovation for the nation, I hope also between these sessions, you've had a chance to check out our sponsor booth. We appreciate them being on board here we're moving into session three of today's hangout series.

So I do invite you to stay here with us now visit those booths between sessions, but this session is off the grid going offline with Google Maps and earth. Almost all of our sessions, we've talked about last two days have had some component where we've mentioned integration with Google Maps. Yesterday we had several sessions showing some very clear kind of online capabilities, but what we're going to do for the next 20 minutes here, some slides and a live demo with Shawn bday product manager for Google's geo team and we're going to be talking about the scenario Of what happens, how can you still use powerful tool like Google Maps in a situation where you don't have network access?

One of the first things that comes to mind is in a disaster type scenario. Networks can be affected. You don't have access to a tool that again many of us have probably come to just take for granted. I know I use maps if I'm out of town i'm using it three four five times a day, if I'm local, I still using it. You know typically once or twice a day, possibly on my phone or at home, either going somewhere just to get an idea of the vicinity I'm going to, but again when we don't have that. How do we access a powerful tool? That'S what Shawn's going to share with us today, the team there has been working on that capability for us for governments as well, so Shawn appreciate you taking time. Certainly turn things your way thanks, James really appreciate it.

So, as James mentioned, my name is Sean Maday. I have the great privilege of working with an awesome team of engineers here, in Mountain View, California, who are working on an interesting set of challenges and our goal is to take the consumer mapping experience that users are custom to with Google Earth and Google Maps and Make it available offline so before we get that I kind of before we get to speaking to that, I just want a baseline and talk a little bit about this realm of geospatial or geo. No maps have been around a long time. The Babylonians had early clay max on clay tablets back in 2300 BC and and since then maps have changed. But in general we use maps as a way to understand the world around us to understand relationships between place and and location.

And so as we as a society have become more accustomed to using mobile devices, we have seen the ubiquity of this mapping experience kind of take off right. It'S now omnipresent, as James mentioned echecks map several times a day, he's out of out of the area and in an area that's unfamiliar. I personally use maps constantly and its really interesting how this whole field of mapping has become much more accessible from the common person or the layperson just a few years ago, that maps were really reserved for specialists cartographers, remote sensing specialists, scientists, but today you know, I Always like to share the anecdote that my mother, who could never set the television VCR when I was growing up, she always just gave up on that. The same woman today, 20 years later holds an iphone out of her pocket and wants to see where the nearest Starbucks is, and I think that really highlights how this this field has changed and become so much more accessible.

So today, obviously awesome mapping experiences from google maps on many different devices. Many different form factors tablets desktop laptops, but, as you can imagine, there are use cases and specifically use cases faced by enterprises and then governments and profit for-profit businesses and the like, where Internet connectivity is just unavailable or it's intermittent. So we really see this being applicable, as James mentioned in disaster response and humanitarian relief type situations, where, maybe you know, tornado has degraded the local communications infrastructure.

Perhaps an earthquake has has damaged connectivity, and so in that immediate aftermath is you're. Trying to take a toll of people and damaged a map can be absolutely vital, but we need to have the flexibility to make those maps available in the absence of connectivity. Another way to kind of look at. That is, if you don't have connectivity it. Maybe you have some connectivity, you also don't necessarily want that that fire truck that's speeding to the scene of an incident to be reliant on a 3g or 4g network, as we are all customed to you, you go through parts of town where that connectivity can be Intermittent or hard too hard to get a signal so there's also these semi connected use cases where having a map available native on the local device can really be critical. So that's what my team works on here. We have this neat mandate to take Google's consumer mapping. Experience and make it available offline, so we do that with a product that we call Google Maps engine portable and the goal again is just 22 as closely as possible.

Parallel that online experience and what we've done is we've been able to build out a platform that currently works on windows, mac, linux and android platforms to provide the google earth 3d experience and the 2d google maps experience for individuals so to kind of baseline. A little more, it's one thing to take google's mapping data offline, but often organizations and enterprises have data, that's unique to their specific areas of practice right, and so what Google has done? Kind of independent of this portable project that we're speaking of is they've created this platform that I think Dave McCluskey may have to you about yesterday, as you were able to dial in for his session, but it's a platform. We call Google Maps engine. We at Google have developed this really impressive infrastructure for processing lots of imagery terrain and vector data that we publish with Google Earth and Google Maps, but naturally there's just more data out there than then we can truthfully process and publish and there's going to be data. That'S unique to particular industries, unique to particular organizations that just may not be of interest to Google's wider audience. So what we've done is we've tried to productize the platform that we use to deliver Google Earth and Google Maps and make it available for organizations and individuals that want to deliver geospatial data.

So this platform is called Google Maps engine its cloud-based, meaning it runs out of Google's infrastructure, and it does really impressive things at Google scale, with imagery train and vector data unique to an organization. But once this data is in Google's cloud, we can then use the tools that that my team and I are working on, which is to cut out this data as a portable as a portable globe or a portable map single file. All of your map data, you could pull it out of the cloud download it to your device and, what's really neat about this arrangement, is you get the best of all worlds, that is to say, you get Google's base map tiles, your own base map tiles. Maybe some imagery that that your organization has collected or some imagery, that overhead imagery that was available from a local government municipality and then all that interesting vector data by vector data. I mean those points lines and polygons. We see on top of a map. That really add context, but to take all of that data and pull it down run it from your local device without any connectivity to the outside world is a pretty exciting proposition, and that's what that's what I'm gon na demo here for you in just a second. So we tried we try to solve this problem in a very scalable way. What I mean by scalable is a map is something that can be used by an individual or it can be used by a large group of individuals.

And so what we have tried to do is make this platform flexible enough, that the map can be served off. Of a smartphone can be served off from a tablet could be served also the laptop, maybe a hardened laptop, like a panasonic toughbook, that a pilot might take in the cockpit of an aircraft, or you know a utility worker may take out into the field, but also We tried to we've delivered ways for this to be served in a much more Enterprise fashion, that is to say to hundreds or thousands of users behind the firewall on an independent network without any reliance on the on the open Internet. So it's it's really interesting to try to solve this challenge across all of those different requirements. But what I'm about to show? You is kind of what this looks like so I'll transition here and I'm going to come over to my desktop, and I will tell you my desktop was artificially clean today. Normally, I have lots of icons everywhere, but in anticipation of presenting to you all, I made myself look like an organized individual, but here in this google earth portable folder, I can just double-click and all of my Globes and maps are stored in a single directory and There again, a map or a collection of geospatial data can be exchanged as a single file format.

So you can imagine in the event of say, a natural disaster day one you might have a certain amount of geospatial data, and so we could distribute that one file. All of the first responders, or all the search and rescue folks, but as they're out doing what they do over the course of you know 12 or 24 hours. Naturally, we're going to accumulate more geospatial data, maybe get some fresh, satellite or aerial imagery, perhaps get new vector layers that show response zones or which wich roads are open and what's unique about this arrangement. Is that as a team back in an office or a tactical operation center assembles that next iteration of the map? They can then cut a new version and distribute that back out. So you almost get these snapshots in time, because obviously one benefit of using Google Earth and Google Maps online is the data is living breathing, it's constantly being improved, but as you can imagine, when you, when you take data offline in a way instantly becomes stale. So well the nice arrangement with this particular this particular software. This particular solution is that it can support many different use cases with these iterative or delta type updates as map data changes and evolves. But here I'm just going to double click on my Google Earth, portable icon, and in doing so I'm going to launch a user interface that looks and feels just like something online and that this is intentional.

This is meant to feel like the experience you have with maps, google com and it runs just out of a web browser, but you may notice that this is not running from an HTTP address out on the open internet. It'S actually running from a little localhost URL on my own machine, so though, I'm viewing this through web browser all of the map data, I'm about to show you is coming from the local machine here. If we were, if we were all in the room together, I'd turn off the internet. Show you exactly how this works, but clearly to share my screen with you and to make this work for a virtual event. Here our virtual summit ought to keep the internet on, but what you're seeing here is the polygon. I cut this particular example. I cut all the map data for the San Francisco area, specifically San Francisco County, so you notice actually outside of that area out in Berkeley.

You'Ll notice that that area looks a little pixelated because I don't actually have map data in this particular portable cut for that region. But we can zoom in here and we can look at these tiles, and this looks and feels exactly like. The Google Maps experience online. Again, all of this content is being loaded locally from my device and as James mentioned initially, and I've brought up a couple times now, even particularly to disaster response scenario. This consumer familiarity can be absolutely critical because, as you can imagine, you know when lives are at stake when property has been damaged, it's not the time for individuals to learn new tools so by using the best of the consumer breed inside of enterprises and inside of Organizations we can really capture that consumer familiarity to and make it a force multiplier in a sense, so that your your first responders your field workers can be more productive, faster.

So some other examples that they kind of highlight how you could how you could use some of this map data, for instance, I'll, show you this this one here I took all the amtrak lines in florida and we actually cut these as a route. So what we were able to do is say around every Amtrak station. I want a ten mile circle in case I were to get out of a station walk around, but around the tracks. Maybe I just want two miles in either direction. Just so I kind of get a frame of reference but short of us. You know some sort of train breakdown, i'm not going to be getting out and walking around in the Everglades and so we'll take another peek at that polygon here.

But you can really see where this map data has been cut and so, as we zoom in to Tallahassee here again all this map data loaded locally on my machine. But the experience looks and feels like Google Maps, as i zoom in you'll notice. We have all of this rich content down to a very deep zoom level, and we can take advantage of it here for our reference. In addition to what you're seeing here, we can also take the. We can also take the map data and build on top of it, so it's very foundational. In a sense, this map data can be incorporated into offline applications for field data collection or applications that your organization needs to fulfill their mission. So a couple demos there and i'll probably just wrap up with it, with a few slides just to talk about our vision and some of the possibilities for this type of technology.

So, as i mentioned to you, this is tightly integrated with our Google Maps engine product, offering what I mean by that is, if you have your data in Google's cloud, this is a way that we can. We can give you to take that data liberate it take it out and actually access it in those areas where you may not have connectivity to the outside world. One of our first use cases for portable actually was on the International Space Station. We worked. We worked with the team that wanted to provide google earth 3d functionality for the astronauts on the space station and, as you can imagine, there are very few places in the universe as bandwidth constrained as the as the International Space Station.

So that was kind of a cool marquee I meant for us, but the concept is that you could just cut this map data in small chunks out of Google Maps edges. So you might have terabytes tens of terabytes hundreds of terabytes of data in Google Maps engine, but maybe today you just want a one particular County or you want one particular driving room, and so we provide tools where you can literally just draw a polygon, decide how Deep inside that polygon to cut or what level of detail to extract and then what level of detail you might want for the rest of the world. And of course this file could be. You know several megabytes in size or it could be many terabytes in size and it's very it's a very interesting engineering problem to solve and again it's an evolving product where we're making some interesting inroads. But just this week we cut a large six terabyte portable map, which almost at six terabytes it's hard to call that portable, because there aren't that many hard drives out running around that you can just throw that on.

But again, lots of interesting use cases and lots of evolving capabilities here. So one of the piece just to leave you with what we really envisioned for this is the way that this technology could be used in a programmatic, proactive fashion. And what I mean by that is all over. The world alerts are issued by government agencies and what I mean by alerts are things like in the United States, the the National Weather Service or the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration will issue alerts when there's going to be a significant weather event like a tornado or Severe thunderstorm, perhaps even you know, a freeze event in in the southern part of the United States, can be pretty critical to infrastructure and can cause a lot of a lot of headaches, and so, in real time, these agencies are out there putting out alerts on the Right side of the screen here you see the cone of uncertainty that Noah always releases for their hurricanes and what's really unique about the platform that the team I get to work with here is built, is that we now have ways to programmatically cut portables based on Real time data, what I mean by that is, if your county goes under some sort of severe thunderstorm warning without any human intervention, we can just make sure that the minute that that alert is issued programmatically in the background map data for that county is being cut And eventually, we want to get to a point where that map data could then be synced out to the mobile devices of first responders, so that, even if that severe thunderstorm doesn't affect the connectivity in the area or it doesn't degrade the cell phone network, the first Responders would still have that data but in the event that the worst happens and there's no connectivity to the internet, that data would be proactively on their device and ready for them to use to make authoritative decisions and get their jobs done.

So lots of interesting capabilities and evolving potential for this, but that's kind of what I wanted to cover today was talk to you a little bit about portable, so hey Sean. Let me piggyback on that idea. You just shared a vision I have potentially, and maybe your team's thought about this. Could there be a case I was in Denver recently in a tornado, hit down on the airport yeah and we had a shelter in place on the California kids. So usually it's earthquakes. We get my attention, but could you see a scenario where a municipality a government agency was able to push out something to the public as well? That might have a map that says here are the tornado, shelters in a certain region? Is that being done yet? Is that a things that you've heard people thinking about yeah absolutely? And that's really been one of the one of the primary drivers of that Google Maps engine platform that that we talked about earlier?

You know it's unique, that what we do is Google. From a from a mapping perspective. You know we have millions of users and tens of millions of users who rely on our map data and and we live in an ecosystem where, if that map date is a fast and authoritative, those users can very quickly go somewhere else, and so it behooves us To make sure that our infrastructure serves that data in a fast, reliable way, what that also means is that we have this elastic infrastructure that can handle spikes and the reason I'm going down the true telling you is because interesting things happened a couple years ago, when We put up our Santa tracker, you know we're on the twenty-fourth of December. Children can track center around the world. Our infrastructure was receiving 1.6 million queries per second, as children around the world logged in to see where Santa was and what's really unique about. Google'S info structure, is it elastically handles those surges or, and then, of course, the subsequent dips in traffic that are just natural to to the world we live in, and that really is important when it comes to disaster response or, for instance, James, to your scenario, about The tornado in Denver, because nobody might care about a map of Denver that shows first aid, shelters or or Red Cross locations today.

But after that, tornado hundreds of thousands or even millions of people might instantly want that information and so so to hear point. We'Ve actually partnered with with folks all over the world, but most recently in New York City to make sure that they could use our infrastructure. Oops and I got it - I got another appointment - I'm sorry about that - my calendar jaya, dezod yeah, but the but again to your point to make sure that those maps were available when people needed them how they need to let's get away from disasters. Let'S be a little more cheery here, ct's been with us on this event out in Colorado. He brought up an idea of hiking trails, fire road stuff, like that. Can I also see a scenario that a forestry department or a fish and wildlife, or something like that? Could even provide certain maps again for end-users, ultimately to download if they're going back country, camping, hiking, where they know services in video, you could at a trailhead, maybe get a map downloaded, and then you have that and not offline capability.

Yeah absolutely - and I think that's really this evolving - this evolving paradigm we see is that individuals want to consume data in ways that are familiar to them, and so, if they're driving from point A to point B, they're using a google map where they're using google earth And so i think, an evolving area of opportunities for organizations to adapt the way they deliver their content, whether that's trail maps, perhaps it's you know, tour maps in big cities but to distribute that via platform people know and use and can quickly integrate quickly. Understand is, if there's a lot of potential there, where were you know we're keen on trying to answer that market demand dan, bringing up the the filesize? You mentioned that six, I believe, terabyte. But what is what have you heard back? What is your team seen for? Most applications, especially on you, know that a android device or that portable tablet something like that, what size do most of these kind of take up yeah. So it really depends on that area of coverage, for instance, the the demo I showed of San Francisco County.

All of San Francisco accounting was only 20 megabytes, so a very reasonable file size, all of the the amtrak routes in florida, a little bit larger up to 80 megabytes, and so it really scales and the nice thing about these tools and the tools that again, this Great team of engineers i get to work with is working on is that we want to give people a very granular ability to decide exactly what map data they want to take with them and and so that they can truly decide. You know if they only have two gigabytes available on their phone. Well, here are the constraints they can work in to cut a map that will fit that that file size makes sense a CT get out there in colorado wondering are there any programs for first responders to be kind of field testing any of this or have we Moved beyond kind of test phase, what can you talk about that people interested wanting to try and get this in their hands?

Use it yeah, it's a great question, and, and so one of my challenges is not how we, how we get this out there to the world and we don't currently have you know a trusted tester or an outreach initiative directly tied to this. But we have a really strong Google outreach team, specifically in geo. We have a great outreach team and - and we absolutely anticipate providing grants for thesaurus technology so that we can get it into the hands of those those first responders or those academics or those nonprofits that are doing really interesting things and want to leverage this capability. To get their job done so more to come on that again, it's new technology and we're still trying to figure out exactly the best way to get this into the hands of people all over the world.

Let'S well, let's stay will come back to the emergency idea in one second year, but a couple other ideas that I'm seen here, utility digging. Someone could be out in a Aria property lines right that could be potentially use cases immuno, I'm just seeing a lot of ideas flowing through people say: hey could use it, for this could use it for that. All things you've heard absolutely that field data collection is kind of a big use case that that we see, you know a lot of demand for and whether that's a researcher who's going out to look at beaver dams along a river, or it could be that utility Worker who's going out to survey poles or switching stations, there's there's this disconnect and a lot of our enterprises, where the tools that workers have to do their job haven't kept pace with the power of these smartphones that we have in our pocket. And so really that's what we're kind of keenly focused on and that's what this great team we have here is working on is how do we take this consumer technology of maps on earth, get it in the hands of those utility workers, those researchers and all those People who can who can use this technology to do their job faster, better, smarter, but absolutely Larry is looking to kind of push buttons and move this forward wondering are there features to the offline map where maybe someone the field could take a picture, get information and Then kind of sink that back to their offline and or online map experience that they might be doing yeah absolutely so we have some initiatives underway to do.

You know to really leverage the all the sensors on these phones. We carry in our pocket. You know I happen to carry an iphone and an Android. If you think about it, I mean these things have cameras, they have GPS, they have accelerometers, there's all sorts of interesting data that that can be collected and what we try to do is provide tools and, in some cases, api's or application programming interfaces, so that that Data can be synced back up with the cloud push back into Google Maps engine and then possibly distribute it out to other users. Lots of really exciting ways that this can all come together to fit very specific vertical needs. Sean. I give regular updates to google maps on my phone ridin. Is that update schedule similar to the base tiles in this offline mode? Yes, so it's a great point. You know we gooo one of the hallmarks of Google Maps.

All right. One of the big kind of market validations for us is that our maps are constantly getting better and when they aren't right in a particular place, people tell us and that's one benefit of having the online Google Maps. Experiences that you know when you for those directions from the san francisco airport to downtown san francisco, we're going to give you the latest and greatest information we're going to give you the best detour information, the best traffic. One challenge with offline maps, of course, is that when you cut that map - and you create that portable size, that file is almost instantly stale, and so you know we're looking at interesting ways in the future. We can sync data back and forth between the device as connectivity allows, but today it's really just kind of more of draw. The polygons draw the shape you want to extract. Take that data with you and serve it up locally.

A couple of questions here, we'll get in from Brandon and from Greg Brandon, just kind of even smaller ideas, mineral and mine inspectors, tobacco license inspectors. I mean he's just seeing tons of applications out there for, for this Brandon appreciate that Greg here saying, love the idea of sharing that data are their liability concerns if, for example, in underground power line is off a little bit and someone does some digging and it Was supposed to be three meters over here and that map that was given at those types of issues? Yeah? No, I think that's a great point and and that's that situation of those challenges aren't unique to just to just digital maps. Right for years, paper maps have been inherently inaccurate or slightly off, and I think, what's really unique about the current ecosystem. We'Re living in is that our maps are more current enough to date than they ever happened before. Naturally, when we, when an organization goes out, they find out that may be that that power line was three feet, one way or the other. But the nice thing about the the way these tools work is that that field field worker right can can make that correction and then federate that correction back out to the entire enterprise.

As opposed to you know, in the past, where all of this data lived on independent devices and and that worker would go out and dig and sure enough, the line wasn't where we're supposed to be and they'd eventually find the line and get the job done. But did that data really get back to the authoritative system and make it more accurate? You know that the soldier, so there's lots of components to that situation, but it's an exciting time to have this technology and to be leveraging this technology inside of enterprises. Oh, absolutely: hey, Sean's, been a good shot here. Appreciate you joining this hangout. Goal-Winning Strategies of 3 Top Athletes

Discover Their Personal Secrets for Achieving Peak Performance

Few of us run races at the Olympics or score touchdowns in the NFL. But we all play a metaphorical sport in our professional and personal lives. Simply put: we want to succeed and thrive. To win, we must set big goals and work toward effective and influential results.

Problems seldom arise from our goal-setting itself. Each New Year offers another prime opportunity to make resolutions and set goals. But it’s our end-of-the-year progress reports that truly count, and research suggests that the further away we get from our initial goal setting, our “motivation tends to lag.”

Toward the end of each day, quarter, or year, it’s prudent to ask ourselves if we’ve actually followed through and met our goals. It’s also wise to ask if by meeting our goals, we’ve seen some sort of positive, transformational effect in our business or life.

Three top athletes help show us the way forward.

1. Connect with a deeper purpose

Colt McCoy is currently a backup quarterback for the Washington Redskins. When I interviewed him a few years back for a book project written with his mentor, Matt Carter, Colt had been the winningest quarterback in the history of NCAA football before beginning his NFL career with the Cleveland Browns.

Colt described how throughout his whole life, he’d been hardwired to win. Yet he had mistakenly set some misguided goals. He came to this conclusion after a shoulder injury sidelined him during the BCS National Championship game, and after his mentor was diagnosed with life-threatening cancer. Colt and Matt both made a vow then and there to live with what they termed “unction”—purposeful urgency—as if every day must count for what truly matters.

Colt was still dedicated to giving his all on the field. But he began to redefine success in the light of this “unction.” For Colt, that meant being the best husband and father he could be, truly caring about his teammates and coaches, reaching out to his community, and staying true to his faith.

“Achievement is still important to me,” Colt said. “I get up every day and work my tail off as I continue in my career. But my heart is also set on more. I’ve realized that being a great quarterback is not my only purpose in life.”

Once Colt defined what truly mattered to him, he was able to focus on those areas more and let superfluous things fall away, which led to peak performance.

2. Turn past hurts into determination

Derrick Coleman Jr. is currently the fullback for the Atlanta Falcons. When I interviewed him a few years back for his memoir he’d just made history as the first legally deaf athlete to play offense in the NFL. He’d also won a Super Bowl with the Seattle Seahawks.

That level of success came only after expending enormous grit in overcoming obstacles. As a hearing-impaired child growing up in L.A., Derrick was always mainstreamed in public schools. His parents knew that for Derrick to succeed in life, he must not receive any special treatment. Unfortunately, he was often bullied.

One day in first grade, Derrick stood in the playground as children formed a ring around him, laughing, pointing his direction. You know how kids call you “four-eyes” if you wear glasses? Derrick wore two large hearing aids, and on that day the kids chanted “four-ears” over and over again.

That was only one incident. Kids made fun of the way he talked. Kids called him other mean names. One day after school, Derrick was jumped by an older group of kids who punched him, grabbed his hearing aids out of his ears, and threw them far into the middle of a playing field.

“Those things happened. I’m done with it,” Derrick said, looking back. “I would never use what happened back then as an excuse for why I couldn’t do something later on. Whenever I was bullied, I went back to school the next day and continued on. When something bad happens to you, you can’t let your grieving period last too long. There’s just too much great stuff out there in the world waiting for you.”

Derrick never let his past hurts define the rest of his life. He used them as fuel to set the bar high, to impel him to work hard to reach those larger goals, and ultimately to achieve peak performance.

3. Work hard and commit to total victory

The late Lieutenant Lynn “Buck” Compton (1921-2012) isn’t primarily remembered as a top athlete, but he was. I was greatly honored to have met Buck—this man of such high lifelong achievement—to speak with him and interview him on many occasions.

In college, Buck was a two-sport athlete for UCLA, playing both football and baseball and excelling in both. In football, he played in the 1943 Rose Bowl. In baseball, the legendary Jackie Robinson was a teammate.

When World War II broke out, Buck’s initial assignment was the 176th infantry regiment, a Virginia National Guard outfit at Fort Benning. To his surprise, he learned that his sole purpose for being in the regiment was to be a member of their baseball team.

Buck was leery about his initial assignment. He wrote home, warning his mother not to tell anybody what he was doing. In Buck’s thinking, “There was a war on, and I was embarrassed that my only contribution playing baseball.”

Having a winning regimental baseball team was considered a prime commodity for any commanding officer. It was well known that COs would routinely block any application for transfer made by a ballplayer. The only two exceptions (where a commander was powerless to stop a transfer) were for flight training or parachute training. Flight training took about a year. If Buck chose flight training, he was afraid the war would end before a year passed and he would miss it. Jump training took only one month.

So Buck joined the paratroopers.

Lt. Lynn “Buck” Compton

Buck became an officer with the famed Easy Company, 506th PIR, 101st Airborne, the elite group of paratroopers known as the Band of Brothers. He parachuted into Normandy on D-Day, fought valiantly in Operation-Market in Holland where he was wounded, and braved the snow and ice of the battle of Bastogne. He was awarded the Silver Star for his actions during the assault on Brecourt Manor.

After the war, Buck became a detective, an attorney, and later a judge. While an attorney, he successfully prosecuted Sirhan Sirhan for the murder of Bobby Kennedy.

Some of Buck’s earliest lessons on goals and achievement came from back in his high school days when he played two years of varsity football for Los Angeles High School. Previously, sports were something he’d always played for fun. But in high school, he encountered the famed hard-driving coach Bert La Brucherie.

Buck played offensive guard, and early in his first varsity season he missed a block during a scrimmage. Coach La Brucherie smacked Buck on the side of the helmet, chewed him out, and snarled, “Are you going to miss him again?”

“No sir,” was all Buck said. And he didn’t.

As Buck told me, “Coach Bert always pushed us to play as absolutely hard as we could. We practiced daily, at times until well after dark. Sometimes it grew hard to see the other players on the field. Coach would throw back his head and bark: ‘Look for the stripes on his socks!’ That was his form of humor, and as we got to know him, we laughed right along with him. Our respect for him grew as we understood his unswerving commitment to excellence. Nothing more than total commitment to victory would do.”

I asked Buck if he remembered those lessons later in life. “You bet I did,” he said. “His voice helped push me through a lot of hard times, including the war years. His presence became a part of me. Whatever mud or snow we were in, if our ammunition ran low or we didn’t eat for some time, Coach Bert was there. His voice ingrained its way into my head. I couldn’t shake that boom if I tried.”

Set high goals, work hard to reach those goals, and commit to total victory. That was Buck Compton’s secret to peak performance. If we can do that, connect with a deeper purpose, and turn past setbacks into determination for the future, we’ll be one huge step closer to the goal line.
